How to Clean Copper Countertops

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ketchup
  • Vinegar
  • Salt
  • Cloth
  • Lemon
  • Flour
  • Beeswax
Step1
Mix together ½ cup of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of salt to create a paste. The ketchup contains tomatoes, which like lemons, have an acid neutralizing effect allowing them to cut through greasy buildup.
Step2
Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth to apply the ketchup paste in a circular motion to the surface of the counter top. Allow to sit on the surface of the counter for at least 45 minutes.
Step3
Wipe away the paste residue with another clean damp cloth. Be sure to remove any ketchup discoloration. Repeat as necessary.
Step4
Apply a combination of salt and vinegar to the surface for a more aggressive cleaning. This method works well on counter tops that have many dimples and dents from frequent use. Use a damp cloth and wipe off after about half an hour with plain water.
Step5
Cut a lemon in half and dip the open end into a bowl of salt. Use the lemon as a cloth to work across the entire length of the counter, dipping into the salt as needed. Rinse with warm water and a soft cloth.
Step6
Substitute flour for the ketchup paste recipe in Step 1 for an alternative cleaning paste. The flour is used for a much softer cleaning as it does not neutralize acid.
Step7
Seal the cleaning job with beeswax to prevent fingerprints and to increase the longevity of your work surface. Realize copper is supposed to change color over time and don't get hung up on small scratches that simply add character.
