How to Make an Old Fashioned Brush and Comb Set

- Plain hand mirror
- Matching brush and comb
- Glue
- Fabric
- Flat or ruffled lace
- Trims (braid, strings of pearls, beads, rhinestones, other jewels, sequins)
- Embroidered appliques
- Cameos
- Ribbon flowers
- Jewelry (large pendants or broken brooches)
Design on paper the type of vanity mirror, brush and comb set desired to determine the type of materials to purchase to complete the project.

Purchase the items required.

Trace the shape of the mirror, brush back and comb ridge (the part held in the hand or above the teeth) onto paper and cut the pattern out. Lay it on top of each piece to make sure that is the part of the surface that will be decorated. If necessary, adjust the pattern size.
Step4
Pin the pattern onto the fabric chosen as the base. Rich velvets, silks, satins and lace--plain or designed--are perfect for this purpose. If the fabric edge will be sewed under like a hem rather than trimmed out, allow an additional 1/4 to 1/2 inch of fabric around the pattern for that purpose. Otherwise, cut exactly to fit pattern size.

Sew the fabric back around the pattern edge if that is part of the design.

Adhere the fabric to the vanity items with glue that is appropriate to the type of materials being used. Be sure that it is thoroughly dried before moving on to the next step.

Trim the edges of the fabric if that is part of the plan. Braid, ruffled lace, strings of pearls that are flat on one side, rhinestones and sequins work beautifully. However, virtually any decorative trim desired can be used. It is best not to carry the trim down onto the handle of the vanity items since they will be handled regularly and could become damaged or dislodged, thereby ruining the item.

Embellish the fabric with embroidered appliques, cameos, ribbon flowers or jewelry items (such as large pendants or brooches that have the pin broken off).

Add additional trim around the embellishments, if desired, such as thin (1/16 to 1/8 inch) ribbon, metallic trim or rhinestones. Another option is to use glitter or opalized paints for trim. These help to provide additional adherence of the embellishments.
Step10
Opt for rows of lace rather than using any fabric base. Begin at the outside of the item (mirror, brush or comb) and work toward the inside using one continuous piece of lace. Once the center is reached, cut the lace with just enough left over to glue it down in the center. Cover the center with a cameo, flowers or other embellishment.
